Assistant Medical Officer Course Profile (PDF)
This course is open to clinical officers (CO’s) in Tanzania and elsewhere who have been in public/private work practice for at least 3 years in a health related field. The applicant must have either an ordinary or advanced level secondary school certificate.
Objectives: The Assistant Medical Officer should be able to:
1. Develop an understanding of how the human body functions and how it can be affected.
2. Diagnose and manage common and emergency surgical, obstetric, gynaecological, paediatric and tropical medical conditions and refer those outside his or her skills.
3. Use rationally the services of a clinical laboratory
4. Practice aseptic procedures
5. Prescribe responsibly and rationally
6. Organize and manage properly a medical, surgical, reproductive and child health wards and out patient department at district level.
7. Keep records, collect and interpret health management statistics in the district.
8. Assess the health priorities within an area by estimation from available data and by means of simple surveys.
9. Maintain supplies and equipment regularly in all peripheral units under his/her care.
10. Supervise activities on the control of major endemic/epidemic diseases.
11. Plan, manage, supervise and evaluate all programs under his/her care.
